Why does my music sound good in headphones but bad at competition?
Headphones deliver the mix directly to your ears in a quiet room. A competition PA is distant, reverberant, and competing with crowd noise, and the frequency balance that reaches the floor is far less even than what headphones deliver. Detail that carried the track on headphones often does not survive the room.

What changes between the two
The room adds a long tail
Arenas, gyms and ballrooms are large hard rooms. Every sound continues for a second or more after it is played, and the next sound arrives on top of it. Detail that was distinct on headphones gets smeared into what came before it.
The system loses both ends
Venue systems roll off the deep low end and the fine top end. Sub-bass you can feel on headphones may be almost absent, and the air and sparkle at the top disappears, which is what makes a track sound dull and distant in the room.
You are no longer listening in silence
Crowd noise, other floors, and building HVAC all sit in the same midrange as most music. Anything quiet enough to be subtle on headphones is simply gone.
Quiet passages become dead air
A dynamic mix with a big loud-quiet contrast is exciting on headphones. In a noisy room the quiet parts drop under the noise floor and the performance loses its accompaniment.
Why turning it up does not fix it
The instinct is to ask the sound desk for more volume. That raises everything, including the reverberant tail and whatever is already muddy, so the track gets louder and less clear at the same time.
The fix has to happen in the mix, not at the fader — controlling the dynamic range so quiet sections stay present, and shaping the tone so the parts that carry the performance sit in the frequency range the room reproduces.

How to check your own track before you compete
Play it on a single small speaker across the room, at conversational volume, with a fan or some background noise running. It is a crude simulation and it will still tell you most of what you need to know: if you lose the beat or a section disappears, the venue will be worse.
Master it for the room you compete in.
